Maintaining regular movement at work

Regular movement supports our physical health and mental health, yet many of us find ourselves sat or stood in the same posture for long periods of time, which can negatively impact our health. It’s not always
easy to remember to move while at work, especially during busy periods, but short bursts of activity can make a real difference. To help, we invite you to try out some of the tips below to help break up long
periods in the same position. Aim to do this at least once every hour, and remember, any movement is better than none at all!

  • Desk stretches – Try these stretches during your day to help avoid aches and pains when working at a desk.
  • Avoid back to back meetings – Make meetings 5-10 minutes shorter to allow time to get up and minimise sitting for hours.
  • Short bursts of energy – Just 2 minutes can help, whether it’s getting up for a drink or walking around the building.
  • Use your lunch breaks – Whether it’s going for a walk or a short jog, utilise your breaks where possible to get active.
  • Move during calls – Standing and walking around during calls can help. It’s also a chance to stretch.
  • Set reminders to move – You could do this in your calendar, or use your phone or wearable to remind you.
  • Set small goals – Assess how much you currently move, and try to gradually build up your activity level.
  • Prioritise it – It can be easy to let movement slip down the list, but ultimately this is your health and wellbeing.
