Top 10 good health tips

Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Stress and demands often take a toll on our minds, leaving us to feel down or anxious. With a few lifestyle and attitude changes, however, we can make sure our mental health doesn’t suffer.

Here are ten tips to help you maintain your mental health:

1. Eat a well-balanced diet full of fresh unprocessed foods and drink plenty of water

Studies have shown that taking care of ourselves physically has enormous beneficial effects upon our physical and psychological well being.

2. Watch your intake of alcohol and other drugs or toxins

Alcohol and other drugs exert heavy pressure upon our vital organs and can leave us feeling depressed and lethargic.

3. Take some form of invigorating exercise at least 3 times per week

Exercise produces “feel good” hormones called endorphins and can also enhance our sense of control and self-esteem as well as helping to maintain good physical health.

4. Find a form of relaxation that suits you

Yoga, meditation, tai chi and other forms of relaxation have been proven to help reduce stress and clear our minds so that we can cope with the demands of today’s lifestyle.

5. Avoid negativity in any form

Negative patterns of thinking can stop us from enjoying life, solving problems and reaching our full potential. Learn to think positively – you might want to try counselling or a personal development course.

6. Develop a positive problem-solving approach to life

Research has shown that people who approach life in this way live longer, look younger and find happiness for themselves and their friends.

7. Make time for yourself and your interests or hobbies

Taking time for yourself is important so you can re-charge depleted energy and find the resources to cope with other areas of our lives.

8. Manage your stress

It would be unrealistic to think that we can fully eliminate stress or anxiety from our lives, but we can learn to manage and reduce it. If you feel your stress levels are too high and affecting your enjoyment of life you may want to access counselling or a stress management course. There are also a number of very good self-help books.

9. Respect and accept yourself – develop your self-esteem and assertiveness skills

A healthy self-respect and knowing how to express yourself and your needs will help you to stay mentally fit.

10. Live in the moment – go with the flow

Trying not to dwell on the past or worry about the future is a good way to reduce stress and allows us to appreciate the present.
