Mental health support over the festive season

Image of a candle.

While those around you may be getting into the festive spirit, this time of year can often heighten emotions such as isolation, loneliness, fear of missing out, apprehension and anticipation of what is going to happen. It is important to look after your wellbeing during this time.

If you’re struggling to cope, below are a few things you can consider to help look after yourself.

Try to keep to a routine

Keeping to a consistent pattern of eating and sleeping can help to protect your physical and mental wellbeing. Consider what activities you can include in your week to help keep you physically active and connected to others. For example, walking in nature can benefit your mental health, sleep quality and help to ease feelings of loneliness.

Practice self-care

There are some effective self-care routines to incorporate into your routine to help you recharge and to avoid burn out, such as:

  • A digital detox before you go to bed is a good way to disconnect and refresh. Reading a book is a good alternative to help relax.
  • Try simple breathing techniques especially during stressful periods.
  • Spend a few minutes each night reflecting on your day, what you have achieved and what you are grateful for.
  • Practicing mindfulness is a good way to ground before your day begins.

Talk to someone

Sharing how you feel with others can help you to process your emotions and thoughts. Reach out to friends and family and let them know your plans over the festive period so that they can support you.
