Tips to help navigate through change

managing change

Change is an inevitable part of life, but sometimes it can impact our mental wellbeing in a negative way, even when it is a positive change. This impact can lead to stress and feel like an element of loss, even when it’s not due to bereavement. With this in mind, here are six ideas you can try to help support your resilience and overall wellbeing during change.

List the things you can do – The act of writing and recording down thoughts is good for our emotional wellbeing. Write down what you can do in the present moment, no matter how big or small e.g. talking to a manager about change at work.

Change your mindset – Reframing how we look at a situation can change our thoughts and behaviours. Learn how to challenge and reframe your thoughts to help put you in a more positive frame of mind.

Maintain regular activities – Our routines can help us to stabilise during periods of change. Try to notice the positive things you do have and express gratitude towards them. This can help you to feel more positive about the future.

Recognise what is in your control – Identifying what we can and can’t control can help to manage worry during times of uncertainty. Try this exercise to help identify the things you can control, and what aspects you need to accept and let go of.

Practice self-care – Actively look after your physical and mental health to help navigate change and boost your resilience. For example, this could include exercise, a healthy diet, prioritising quality sleep and making time to relax.

Use your support network – Social connection is fundamental to our overall wellbeing. It can help to increase resilience and lower rates of anxiety. Talking to someone you trust about any struggles is a great supportive mechanism.

If you are struggling to cope to the point it is significantly impacting your daily life, consider making an appointment with your GP. They will be able to advise on other interventions, and signpost you to any support initiatives available in your local area.
