What it is mindfulness?
In the words of Jon Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness involves “paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgementally.” This entails redirecting our focus to the current moment, steering away from concerns about the future or dwelling on past actions. Mindfulness encourages heightened awareness of our thoughts, emotions, and surroundings without passing judgment.
Many of us tend to get caught living in the past or the future instead of living in the here and now, which can negatively impact our mental wellbeing. Practicing mindfulness can help us to stay grounded and focused in the present, leading to a more fulfilling and productive life.
Below we explore some of the key benefits of mindfulness and how these can support employees in the workplace.
Six benefits mindfulness can bring to the workplace
- Reduced stress and anxiety – By focusing on current tasks and surroundings, individuals can help themselves to elevate cycles of worry about the future or ruminations about the past. Mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing and meditation, contribute to physiological relaxation, which can help to dial down reactions to stress and anxiety.
- Improved emotional regulation – It’s thought that practicing mindfulness can increase one’s ability to show empathy and help to develop self-regulation. This means that if conflict and challenges do arise in the workplace, they can be handled with greater ease, understanding and thoughtfulness.
- Interpersonal skills – The skills learned through emotional regulation also help with social relationships at work. This supports individuals to foster communication, teamwork and work effectively through any conflict.
- Promotes resilience – Mindfulness promotes resilience by helping individuals develop a greater sense of self-awareness. Through practicing mindfulness, individuals can learn to recognise negative thought patterns and replace them with more positive ones, helping to work towards a more positive mindset. Staying more present in the moment can also help employees to improve their ability to handle challenging situations and support with decision-making.
- Enhanced performance – Studies have shown that mindfulness can help to improve average work performance. This could be down to enhancing focus, reducing stress, and supporting staff to carry out cognitive abilities.
- Contributes towards a positive and inclusive culture – Mindfulness can help to foster a culture of understanding, empathy and compassion, awareness, and open communication. By promoting adaptability and resilience, it supports staff to navigate through change in a more positive way.
How can mindfulness at work be encouraged?
You can help to encourage your staff to practice mindfulness by:
- Providing access to mindfulness tools, via things such as digital tools and wellbeing platforms. You can also signpost staff to information online, such as Headspace, Mind Tools and Mind.
- Get senior leadership and managers to set an example. This could be in the form of sharing a tool which has helped them with the wider company in staff comms, or making time in a team catch-up to share resources on how mindfulness can provide multiple benefits to staff wellbeing and performance.
- Invest in staff training, such as workshops or webinars. Mindfulness is a skill, that needs to be practiced and developed. At Optima Health, we have a library of workshops that can support employees to develop skills such as mindfulness to then reap the benefits in the workplace and across life in general.
- Make mindfulness part of your health and wellbeing strategy. There is growing evidence to support the business case for mindfulness in the workplace. Stress is a common issue in the workplace, and mindfulness as been proven in helping to mitigate symptoms and build resilience.
- Promote mindfulness in your company. This could be through initiatives like holding group mediations once a week, encouraging staff to take their breaks and working to foster a healthy work-life balance.
Summary
Mindfulness in the workplace is essential for promoting employee wellbeing, reducing stress, and enhancing focus and concentration. It fosters a positive work culture by encouraging open communication, empathy, and inclusivity. Mindfulness practices contribute to improved mental health, resilience, and overall job satisfaction, leading to increased productivity and a more harmonious work environment.
