Setting achievable wellness goals

Setting fresh goals for your health and wellbeing, invites you to start the week, month or year ahead renewed with a sense of purpose and motivation. It’s important to avoid overwhelming yourself with unrealistic goals however instead to focus on setting achievable goals that are both practical and rewarding.

Start with small, clear goals

While it’s great to dream big, setting huge, vague goals can be a recipe for fast disillusionment – so rather than saying, ‘I’m going to be super fit this year,’ try defining your goals more clearly and breaking them down into manageable steps. If for example your ultimate aim is to improve your fitness, you could start with a goal to go for a 20-minute walk three times a week. Once this becomes relatively routine, you’ll find it easier to build your activity up a little more on top of a solid behavioural foundation.

Make it personal

The most meaningful goals are the ones that resonate with you on a personal level. Think about what you genuinely want to achieve for yourself and what it means to you practically and emotionally – rather than setting goals you think you ‘should’ pursue.

Set measurable milestones

Another key to achieving your wellbeing goals is making them measurable. When you know exactly what you’re aiming for, it’s easier to track your progress and celebrate small wins along the way. For instance, if you want to improve your mental wellbeing, a measurable goal might be to practise mindfulness for five minutes each day. As you build the habit, you can gradually increase the time or add other practices, like journaling or deep breathing exercises.

Focus on consistency over perfection

It’s easy to feel discouraged if you don’t see immediate results – but remember, building healthy habits is a marathon, not a sprint. Rather than aiming for perfection, focus on staying consistent and resilient. Missed a workout or had a treat? It’s alright. What matters is that you pick up where you left off. Being kind to yourself will help you develop a healthier relationship with your goals and allow you to keep going, even when life gets in the way.

Embrace support and accountability

Sometimes, sharing your goals with a friend or joining a group with similar aims can be a great motivator. Whether it’s a walking group, a friend who enjoys cooking healthy meals with you, or even an online forum, finding a support system can help keep you on track. Accountability doesn’t just keep you motivated, it makes the process more enjoyable when you’re sharing your journey with others.

Appreciate your progress

Finally, take time to acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Reaching a milestone – whether it’s walking further than you could a month ago or consistently getting better sleep is worth celebrating!

Setting achievable health and wellbeing goals is all about making small, positive changes that you can sustain in the long term – and, most importantly, recognising their value. By taking things calmly, one step at a time and focusing on what genuinely matters to you, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, happier you!
